Baby Boomers vision loss will start rearing its ugly head as we age. Since good vision will be critical to maintaining our independence, it's important to take care of our eyes. As we grow older our eyes become less elastic and as a result less able to focus on nearby objects. In this section we'll look at the three most common Baby Boomer vision loss issues we'll be facing.
Cataracts are the most common vision loss issue as you get older. It is estimated that half of Americans ages 65 t0 75 have some degree of cataracts. Cataracts can cause blurred vision or double vision and can create night driving problems. Cataracts occur when the lenses in your eyes become distorted or cloudy.
This video will give you a good overview of cataracts
While a good place to read up on cataracts would be this article from Medicine Net .
occurs in about 3 percent of people over 65. Glaucoma is when fluid builds up in your eyeball to an abnormally high pressure. Glaucoma narrows your field of vision and can lead to blindness if not diagnosed and treated appropriately.
And this is a good overview video about Glaucoma.
If you want to learn more about Glaucoma this article from All About Vision would be a good starting point.
The third most common vision loss Baby Boomers will be facing is Macular Degeneration. Macular degeneration causes you to lose your central vision but maintain peripheral vision. It's symptons include a central blind spot along with gray, hazy vision. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness for the over 65 population in America but can start much earlier.
For more information about Macular degeneration you may want to go to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation's website.
As you can see from the above information, the potential for Baby Boomers vision loss is not something you should take likely.
