There's a close correlation between Baby Boomers and cancer as most of the research results have occurred during our lifetimes. We've not only heard about all the horrors of this disease as we've grown up but also the breakthroughs in its diagnosis and treatment.
The Ol' Boomer is not so dumb to think we can deal with all the aspects of the 100's of cancer types that are out there (Do you realize that there is almost one cancer per human organ and sometimes multiple cancers?), so what we'll do here is divide this section into Womens and Mens cancers as well as an overview area.
Overview of Cancer
Manual of Medical Information" gives us a good workable definition of
cancer for the non-medical person. "A cancer is a group of cells
(usually derived from a single cell) that has lost its normal control
mechanisms and thus has unregulated growth. Cancerous (malignant) cells
can develop from any tissue within any organ. As cancerous cells grow
and multiply, they form a mass of cancerous tissue--called a tumor--that
invades and destroys normal adjacent tissues. The term "tumor" refers
to an abnormal growth or mass; tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous.
Cancerous cells from the primary (initial) site can spread
(metastasize) throughout the body."
Beers, Mark H. MD, Editor-in-Chief, The Merck Manual of Medical Information: Whitehouse Station, NJ, 2nd Home ed. 2003.
These two videos are worth watching if you want to learn more about Baby Boomers and cancer.
Womens Cancer Types
The National Cancer Institute can provide you a good rundown of womens cancer types.
And this video from CBS' "The Early Show" offers some insights into breast cancer myths.
Mens Cancer Types
About.com offers a good rundown of mens cancer types.
And, of course, there's always The American Cancer Society's website.
