As the Ol' Boomer has pondered the Baby Boomer Years, I find that the core decades that seemed to shape our approach to life were the 50's and 60's. Even those of us born as late as the mid-sixties were strongly influenced by the culture of the early Boomers. As a result, I took a closer look at the 50's and 60's and found two pervasive cultural phenomenons that seemed to capture the essence of our formative years.
These Phenomenons Were The Cold War and Social Unrest
The Cold War always seemed to keep us uneasy about the security of our lives. Perhaps this video will give you a better understanding of what I mean.
While Social Unrest was evident in:
1. The Civil Rights Movement
I can still remember seeing these types of stories on the TV constantly! I was appalled by the lack of civility of those opposing the movement and can remember asking my parents why those people beating the marchers were so mean. (Although a small caucasian boy, I could see the obvious injustice.)
2. The Influence of the "Beat Generation"
as seen in this video.
You can learn more about the "Beat Generation" by clicking here .
3. The emerging Sexual Revolution as promoted by Kinsey, the Beat Generation, "Playboy" and other media.
4. And, of course, the Vietnam War to which the Ol' Boomer has dedicated a complete section due to its huge influence in our lives.
Where to go now?
Or the 1950's
Or the 1960's
Or even the 1970's
Want to try the '80s?
How about the 90's?
Even the 21st Century!
