The 1930's and 1940's

The decades of the 1930's and 1940's played a significant role in structuring the geo-political and economic world we Boomers were born into. These were the "coming of age" decades for our parents' generation from which their views of life and the world were formed and thus influenced our earliest approach to life.

The Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression

  • The first TV Commercial
  • The enactment of Social Security and the beginning of U.S. government entitlement programs under FDR's New Deal.
  • The first electronic TV (using tubes). TV technology as we remember it.
  • World War II
  • The Holocaust-1945-
  • Potsdam Conference - Where Churchill, Truman and Stalin established the geo-political world we would be born into.
  • The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Making the Baby Boomer Generation the first to live their lives under the threat of nuclear annihilation.
  • Establishment of the United Nations
  • ENIAC built - The first electronic computer
  • The first of the Baby Boomers are born

         The Balance of the Decade        

  • Dr. Spock's release of his first childcare book.
  • USAF pilot, ChucK Yeager, breaks the sound barrier.
  • Jackie Robinson breaks the color barrier in baseball.
  • The first Cold War Confrontation.

  • NATO formed.
  • USSR successfully tests the atomic bomb.
  • Chairman Mao proclaims the Communist People's Republic of China.
  • The United Nations recognizes Israel as a country.
